1. Stop the stink
Councillors in Chorley expressed their disgust at the length of time it is taking to stop the stink at Clayton Hall landfill and will call on the Government to intervene if the matter cannot be sorted sooner rather than later.

People close to the landfill operated by Quercia Ltd, in Whittle-le-Woods, have been suffering the effects of the odour for several months and the local authority is looking to invoke rarely-used powers to take on the enforcement action itself.

Monitoring of the gases in the air is taking place around the clock and health experts do not expect there to be any long term health impacts.

The advice for people with any health concerns is to contact their GP or call NHS 111.

2. Celebrating 100 years
People all over the world and in Chorley are celebrating 100 years since the Representation of the People Act 1918 and there is plenty happening in Chorley over the coming months to honour this milestone.

Chorley Council is hosting a series of events over the next few months to commemorate 100 years of women having the vote and everyone is welcome to attend and join in with the celebrations.

On International Women’s Day, Thursday 8 March, the colours of the Town Hall Clock will be changed to white, purple and green to reflect the colours adopted by the Women’s Social and Political Union led by Emmeline Pankhurst.

Also for International Women’s Day, the Town Hall will be decorated with a banner to commemorate the anniversary and to remember the women involved in the fight to gain suffrage.

3. Flushed with success
Chorley Council is flushed with success after scooping three national awards for its public toilets.

The council received a top accolade of a Platinum Award for the toilets at the Covered Market in the annual Loo of the Year Awards; was also a Category Winner for the Best Market Toilets, and received an Attendant of the Year Award for the staff who keep the toilets to such a high standard.

The toilets, on Cleveland Street, won the awards following an unannounced check by a fully trained and authorised Loo of the Year Awards inspector.

The aim of the awards, supported by Visit England, is to encourage the highest possible standards in all ‘away from home’ washrooms and the public toilets are judged against strict criteria by the independent inspectors.

4. Cold weather hits Chorley
Recently we have battled with snow, ice, freezing temperatures and strong winds. The Met Office has issued Yellow weather warnings for Chorley and the cold weather is expected to continue into the weekend. We are doing our best to make sure that services run as normal but please keep an eye on this page for updates.

We urge people to take caution when travelling outside and to wrap up warm. If you have a neighbour, a family member or a friend you think might need checking up on please do so to make sure they are ok.

5. Friday Street Car Park
Parts of Friday Street car park will be closed for a few days at a time over the coming weeks as investigation work starts ahead of creating an extra level of spaces on top of the existing car park.

The work will be roughly split into thirds meaning around 30-40 spaces will be closed at a time while holes are drilled to test ground conditions.

Parts of the car park will be closed between:
• Wednesday 28 February and Monday 5 March
• Wednesday 7 March and Thursday 8 March

The investigation work will be used to inform the final design ahead of submitting a planning application.

6. Services protected
People in Chorley will see all their services protected and major investment schemes benefitting people right across the borough continue as Chorley Council continues to do its best for residents amidst huge cuts in its funding.

Councillors described the budget as one of the most difficult it has set after agreeing a council tax increase of 2.99 per cent, only the second increase in eight years.

The budget outlines a gloomy financial picture but shows Chorley is better placed than most to tackle the challenges ahead with continued investment in major projects to bring income in to the borough in return for residents paying an extra ten pence per week in council tax.

7. New Dog Control Order Signs
Chorley Council’s parks and play areas now have new Dog Control Order signage which aims to clearly inform the public of the rules for dogs and their owners in open spaces.

New signs have gone up in Chorley Council owned parks and play areas which address the dog control orders more clearly so that members of the public are aware of the rules in place when taking their dog out in open spaces.

The new Dog Control Order signs have been placed in Chorley Council owned parks and play areas in and around Chorley as a way to better inform dog owners of the rules in place for dogs in open spaces.

The orders have remained the same as before and ask that dogs are kept out of prohibited areas and are kept on a lead on the main pathways and paths associated with play areas and cycle routes, when sports pitches are in use and in picnic areas. Dogs can be let off their lead in other areas of parks as long as they are kept under control of a responsible person.

The orders also state that dog owners must carry a waste bag for the removal of any faeces when taking their dogs into public places so that the waste can be removed and disposed of appropriately.
